Installing Fire Glass with a Gas Fire Burner

Natural gas burners are the most commonly used type of burner in outdoor fire pits. Here's how to install fire glass on top of your burner.

Installing fire glass along with a stainless steel ring burner or a black steel fire ring is fairly simple, though as always we recommend you contact your local contractor if you are unsure about your specific installation.

1. Connect your fire ring

When installing stainless steel fire pit rings, you will first need to decide whether you will install the ring with the holes facing up or down. We generally recommend facing them up, to increase flame size and efficiency. Facing the holes downward will give them a little more protection from moisture, so if you don’t have a way to cover or protect your fire pit when not in use, that may be a consideration. In any case, purchasing a weatherproof cover will extend the life of your fire pit and is highly recommended.

2. Add filler if desired

This is a cost-effective alternative to filling your fire pit with exclusively fire glass. You may want to consider using a filler material such as lava rock, especially if you have a large gap between the bottom of your fire pit and the fire ring.

3. Add your fire glass

This is the final touch after connecting your fire ring and adding the filler as a base. Using a large bucket or pouring straight from the bag, pour your fire pit glass carefully and evenly over the fire ring and filler. Once all fire glass is added, wear protective gloves and use your hands to even out the glass. Your fire ring should have about 2 inches of glass above it to fully hide it from view and shape the flames. Shape the glass according to your taste – most circular fire pits tend to have a rounded peak in the middle of the circle, though others prefer a totally flat surface.
